We Shall Overcome
ABOUT
A poignant late addition to my Lost in Translation series, We Shall Overcome was inspired by the enduring anthem of resilience and unity. I created it during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when isolation, fear, and collective grief felt almost unbearable. The painting carries the emotional weight of that moment.
Layered with texture and meaning, each pass of paint echoes the lyrics—“We’ll walk hand in hand,” “We shall live in peace,” “We are not afraid”—reimagined through my own psychological struggle. The act of creating became a form of catharsis, a way to navigate uncertainty and reclaim even a flicker of hope.
Rooted in the legacy of the gospel hymn I’ll Overcome Some Day, this piece honors both personal and historical perseverance. It reminds me, and I hope anyone who encounters it, that healing is a journey and creative expression is often one of our most faithful companions along the way.
