Daily Meditation for November 1

BEGINNING WITH WORTH

Before I accomplish anything, before I satisfy anyone’s expectations, I have value simply because I exist.

REFLECTION

How often do we measure the value of our day by what we've accomplished? The work we've finished, the people we've helped, the responsibilities we've managed, or the things we've managed to cross off our never-ending lists.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned to associate our worth with what we contribute. We feel good about ourselves when we're productive, useful, or meeting the expectations of others. And when we're struggling, exhausted, or simply need time for ourselves, we can feel as though we're somehow falling short.

But consider how differently we measure the worth of people we love. We don't necessarily value them because of what they accomplish or what they can do for us. We value their presence, their individuality, the ordinary moments we share, and the simple fact that they are part of our lives.

It's worth asking why we sometimes find it so difficult to extend that same understanding to ourselves.

Today, consider what it might feel like to recognize your own value without having to accomplish something to earn it.

WRITE

Think about the expectations you place on yourself.

Write down three things you appreciate about who you are that have nothing to do with your accomplishments, responsibilities, or what you do for others.

What makes these qualities meaningful to you?

CREATE

Gather a piece of paper and whatever drawing or painting materials you have available.

Begin making marks, shapes, or adding colors without planning what the finished piece should look like.

Allow yourself to experiment without correcting or judging what appears on the page.

Consider what it feels like to create something simply for the experience rather than the result.

LISTEN

Choose a song you enjoy listening to simply because it makes you feel good.

As the music plays, give yourself permission to do nothing else. You don't need to work, plan, organize, or accomplish anything.

Notice how comfortable or uncomfortable it feels to spend a few minutes without being productive.

SHARE

If you'd like, share something you wrote, created, or noticed during today's meditation.

What is something you appreciate about yourself that has nothing to do with what you accomplish or provide for others?

You're welcome to participate privately or share only what feels comfortable.
