Turbulence Behind Tranquility Project
Art reveals what silence conceals.
What lives beneath the surface deserves a voice.
Turbulence Behind Tranquility is a mobile arts and mental health advocacy experience bringing visual art, writing, music, education, and community participation into festivals and public spaces.
Originally conceived in 2014 as a large-scale rotating exhibition, the project featured changing groups of artists across galleries, schools, universities, counseling environments, and community venues. Each exhibition used creative expression to explore the realities often concealed beneath outward calm.
From Exhibition to Mobile Community Project
Today, the project continues through a streamlined pop-up format. Curated artwork, educational materials, interactive activities, artist-designed merchandise, and creative care kits invite visitors to reflect, participate, and connect with mental health resources.
The project honors its exhibition history while creating a more accessible future: meeting people in the places they already gather and using art to begin conversations that may otherwise remain unspoken.
The future of Turbulence Behind Tranquility is designed to move.
Why This Project Exists
Turbulence Behind Tranquility grew from my own mental health journey and from the creative practices that helped me understand and communicate experiences I could not always explain directly.
Art gave shape to emotion.
Writing gave language to what felt impossible to say.
Music created movement when I felt emotionally suspended.
Community transformed private struggle into connection.
This project brings those tools together in one public space. It reflects the belief that creative expression can educate, shatter stigma and remind people that what is hidden still deserves to be seen.
The work does not attempt to make pain beautiful or simple. It makes room for complexity.
What Visitors Experience
Each Turbulence Behind Tranquility pop-up is designed as a small but immersive encounter.
Visitors may experience:
Curated Artwork
A rotating selection of original works and exhibition-quality prints exploring mental illness, identity, survival, grief, anxiety, trauma, and recovery.
Each piece is paired with brief interpretive language that helps connect the artwork to lived experience without overexplaining it.
Writing and Reflection
Poetry, personal writing, short essays, and prompts invite visitors to consider what may exist beneath the surface of their own lives.
Interactive Participation
Visitors may contribute to a collaborative artwork, write an anonymous message, or add their voice to a community installation.
The activities are brief, accessible, and designed to meet people where they are.
Educational Resources
Mental health information is presented alongside the artwork in a way that feels human rather than clinical.
Resources may include information from organizations such as NAMI, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, The Trevor Project, and other local or national advocacy partners.
Creative Care Materials
Visitors may take home artist-designed postcards, mini prints, affirmation cards, bookmarks, writing prompts, resource cards, and creative care kits.
These objects extend the experience beyond the event and offer something tangible to return to later.

Bring Turbulence Behind Tranquility to Your Community
Art can reach people before they are ready for a formal conversation.
It can create recognition without demanding disclosure. It can allow someone to stand quietly in front of an image and understand that another person has felt something similar.
That moment matters.
Turbulence Behind Tranquility is moving forward as a public arts and advocacy project built around those moments.
A place where visual art, writing, music, lived experience, and mental health education meet.
A place where silence is not forced to remain silent.
Art reveals what silence conceals.
