Daily Meditation for October 12
I am allowed to change my mind.
REFLECTION
We often treat consistency as evidence of character. We admire people who know what they want, stand firmly behind their decisions, and remain committed to the paths they have chosen. Changing our minds, by comparison, can feel like an admission of uncertainty, poor judgment, or failure.
But we make decisions with the information, experience, and understanding available to us at a particular moment. As circumstances change, so do our perspectives. Something that once brought us happiness may no longer feel meaningful. A belief we defended might become difficult to reconcile with what we have learned. Even the futures we carefully imagined can begin to feel unfamiliar.
There is no obligation to remain loyal to an earlier version of ourselves simply because we once believed we had everything figured out.
Today, consider where you may be holding onto a decision, expectation, or belief because changing your mind feels more uncomfortable than continuing along a path that no longer serves you.
WRITE
Think about a decision you made several years ago that you might approach differently today.
What did you believe at the time? What experiences or new information have influenced your perspective since then?
Write about something you once felt certain of but have gradually come to question. What would it mean to give yourself permission to reconsider it without interpreting that change as a failure?
CREATE
Find an old sketch, photograph, piece of writing, or unfinished creative project.
Examine it from your current perspective. What would you approach differently today?
Using a copy, or beginning with a new piece of paper, reinterpret the original work. Change its composition, rearrange its elements, introduce unexpected colors, or remove something that once felt essential.
Allow the new version to exist beside the original rather than replacing it. Consider how both can represent something true about you at different moments in your life.
LISTEN
Choose a song you once loved but haven't listened to in several years.
As you listen, notice whether it still resonates with you. Perhaps the lyrics carry a different meaning, the melody evokes unexpected memories, or you discover that something you once found comforting no longer affects you in the same way.
Consider how our tastes, emotional responses, and interpretations evolve through experience.
What does your reaction reveal about the person you are today?
SHARE
If you feel comfortable, share a photograph, piece of writing, artwork, or reflection inspired by today's meditation.
What is something you have changed your mind about, and what did that change teach you about allowing yourself to grow?
