Daily Meditation for October 19
I do not need certainty to take the next step.
REFLECTION
We spend an extraordinary amount of time trying to anticipate what comes next. We consider every possibility, rehearse conversations that have yet to happen, and imagine the consequences of decisions we have not made. Somewhere in this process, we begin to believe that certainty is a prerequisite for moving forward.
But life rarely offers such assurances. Relationships evolve in ways we cannot predict. Opportunities appear without guarantees, and even our most carefully considered decisions can lead us somewhere unexpected.
The desire for certainty often comes from a reasonable place. We want to protect ourselves from disappointment, avoid repeating mistakes, and feel confident that our efforts will lead to something worthwhile. Yet waiting until every question has been answered can quietly become another way of remaining where we are.
Perhaps courage is less about feeling confident in the outcome and more about accepting that we cannot know everything before we begin.
Today, consider where uncertainty has influenced your willingness to act. What might become possible if you allowed yourself to move forward without needing to know precisely where the experience will lead?
WRITE
Think about a decision you have been postponing because you are uncertain about the outcome.
What information do you genuinely need before proceeding, and which questions cannot be answered until you have gained more experience?
Write about a time when you made a decision without knowing how things would unfold. What did you discover along the way that you could not have anticipated beforehand?
Consider one small, reasonable step you could take today without committing yourself to an entire course of action.
CREATE
Take a blank piece of paper and make a single mark somewhere near its edge.
Without planning the finished composition, respond to that mark with another. Continue adding lines, shapes, colors, or textures, allowing each decision to emerge from what is already on the page.
Resist the temptation to erase or correct every unexpected result. Instead, consider how an accidental mark might suggest a direction you had not imagined.
When you finish, look at the composition as a record of decisions made without certainty.
What emerged because you allowed yourself to proceed without a predetermined outcome?
LISTEN
Choose a piece of music you have never heard before, preferably from an unfamiliar artist, genre, or tradition.
Listen without reading reviews, examining the lyrics, or learning anything about the composition beforehand.
Notice your expectations as the music unfolds. Are you anticipating a familiar rhythm, predicting where the melody will lead, or deciding whether you enjoy it before the piece has finished?
Allow yourself to experience the music without knowing what comes next.
Consider how curiosity might change your relationship with uncertainty in other areas of your life.
SHARE
If you feel comfortable, share a photograph, piece of writing, artwork, or reflection inspired by today's meditation.
What is one small step you are willing to take without knowing exactly where it will lead, and what might you discover by allowing yourself to begin?
