Unfinished Evidence
Unfinished Evidence – Original Mixed Media Artwork by Erin McGrath Rieke
About This Artwork
I created Unfinished Evidence in 2021 using mixed media on paper, building the composition through layering, interruption, and revision.
The work reflects the way memory and identity rarely remain intact. Experiences accumulate. Some details stay vivid, others fade, and fragments of what came before become part of something we no longer recognize in quite the same way.
Mixed media allows that process to remain visible. Marks, textures, and layered materials coexist on the surface rather than resolving into a single seamless image. Some elements push forward while others recede, creating a composition that feels both constructed and unsettled.
Unfinished Evidence considers what remains after an experience has passed: fragments, impressions, and traces that resist complete explanation. The work does not offer a finished narrative. Instead, it leaves the viewer with partial information and the suggestion that meaning is still being assembled.

Additional Information
My mixed media work often explores memory, identity, and the way experience changes meaning over time. In Unfinished Evidence, fragments overlap, disappear, and reemerge, allowing the surface itself to become a record of accumulation and revision.
The title suggests something incomplete but still present. Evidence remains, but it does not resolve the entire story. What is visible is only part of the narrative, while the spaces between the fragments become equally important.
The original artwork measures 11 × 14 inches. Its 16 × 20 inch framed presentation gives the work greater visual presence while preserving the intimacy and detail of the original composition.
