Angels – Original Framed Pastel Artwork on Paper by Erin McGrath Rieke
About This Artwork
I created Angels in 2021 as an intuitive study of presence, protection, and the unseen forms that seem to accompany us through difficult periods.
Elongated figures rise through fields of blue, green, coral, gold, and pale pink. Some appear fully formed while others remain nearly absorbed by the surrounding color. Their bodies stretch upward, caught somewhere between human figures, memories, and apparitions.
Pastel allowed me to work directly and instinctively. Lines could soften, overlap, and disappear into one another. Rather than defining each figure, I allowed them to remain open and uncertain. They may be guardians, ancestors, companions, or simply the shapes we give to hope when we need to believe we are not alone.
Angels does not attempt to describe the divine. It considers the quieter evidence of care: a presence felt before it can be named, the memory of someone who remains with us, or the unexpected strength that arrives when our own has begun to fail.

Additional Information
The figures in Angels resist fixed identities. Their indistinct faces and lengthened bodies allow them to move between the personal and universal. They may suggest specific people to one viewer and emotional or spiritual forces to another.
Color creates the atmosphere of the work. Cool blues and greens provide depth, while warmer passages of coral, gold, and pink move through the composition like light. The result is a gathering that feels both earthly and slightly beyond reach.
