About This Artwork
I created Because It’s Late in 2020 during the height of COVID-19 isolation as part of The Lotus Project. The series examines interpersonal relationships through a distorted microscope, enlarging the small tensions, dependencies, silences, and gestures that became impossible to overlook when ordinary distance disappeared.
During isolation, time lost its familiar structure. Days repeated themselves. Nights became longer and more psychologically charged. Relationships were asked to contain fear, uncertainty, confinement, and needs that had previously been dispersed across much larger lives.
The title carries more than one meaning. It suggests the literal lateness of sleepless nights, but also the feeling of reaching a point in a relationship when something can no longer be postponed. The hour has advanced. A conversation waits. What has remained unspoken begins to press against the surface.
I worked intuitively with acrylic on paper, allowing the composition to develop through accumulation and revision. Because It’s Late holds the emotional distortion of that period, when closeness could feel like comfort one moment and scrutiny the next.
