Bright Panic is an original acrylic paint pen work created in 2026 as a new addition to my Turbulence Behind Tranquility project. The painting emerged after a seven-hour experience in the emergency room following what was described to me as a “silent heart attack.”
Bright color and chaotic movement fill the paper, reflecting the sensory intensity of the hospital environment. Bodies crowded the waiting room. Patients rested in chairs and hospital beds lined the hallways. Fluorescent light, medical alarms, overlapping voices, uncertainty, and physical fear created an atmosphere that felt both suspended and relentlessly active.
The work developed through my creative meditation practice as a way of processing the anxiety and physiological stress that remained after leaving the hospital. Rather than attempting to recreate the emergency room literally, I allowed color, repetition, and instinctive marks to carry the experience.
The title, Bright Panic, reflects the contradiction at the center of the painting. Panic is often imagined as darkness, but in the emergency room it was vivid, overstimulating, and impossible to ignore. The brightness does not soften the fear. It reveals its intensity.

Bright Panic explores the emotional and sensory residue of a medical emergency. The intense palette heightens the emotional dissonance of the piece. Bright colors collide and overlap across the paper, creating a surface that feels active, fragmented, and difficult to contain. The image carries the energy of an activated nervous system attempting to understand what has happened.
As a new work within Turbulence Behind Tranquility, Bright Panic expands the series beyond the invisible realities of psychiatric illness and trauma to include the psychological effects of physical vulnerability and medical crisis. It considers how the body retains an experience even after the immediate danger has passed.
As with much of my work, Bright Panic leaves room for personal interpretation, inviting viewers to bring their own memories of fear, uncertainty, endurance, and recovery to the piece.
My abstract and mixed-media paintings explore mental health, trauma, physical vulnerability, healing, and resilience through intuitive mark-making, layered movement, and expressive color. Each piece is created entirely by hand as a unique original.
