Built From What She Left Behind – Original Abstract Acrylic Painting on Canvas by Erin McGrath Rieke

About this Artwork

I created Built From What She Left Behind in 2025 after working on the painting, on and off, for nearly five years. Through layers of acrylic paint, texture, and revision, the piece gradually became an exploration of memory, grief, resilience, and transformation.

I approached the work intuitively, building up the surface, covering parts of it, and returning to areas again and again. As the painting evolved, it began to reflect the way memory works. Some moments remain vivid and immediate, while others soften, shift, or become partially obscured with time.

Rather than illustrating loss directly, I wanted to create space for reflection. The layered textures and abstract forms invite viewers to bring their own experiences to the work and discover their own meaning within it.

Additional Information

Much of my abstract work emerges through layering, experimentation, and intuitive mark-making. I rarely begin with a fixed plan. Instead, I allow the painting to evolve through a process of observation, response, and revision.

In Built From What She Left Behind, years of additions and changes created a surface filled with texture, depth, and history. The work reflects my ongoing interest in memory, emotional experience, and the ways our past continues to shape the present. As light and perspective change, different details emerge, allowing the painting to reveal something new over time.

Collecting Original Artwork

My original abstract paintings explore themes of identity, memory, resilience, and human connection. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind work created through an intuitive process that values exploration, vulnerability, and personal interpretation. I invite viewers and collectors to engage with the work through their own experiences and discover the meanings that unfold for them.
