I created Close Doesn’t Count in 2018 as part of my Still I Rise series. I let the acrylic paint move across the canvas, following its shifting paths and allowing the composition to take shape through movement.
The layered currents of color suggest water without describing a particular place. Soft transitions and subtle variations in the surface give the painting a quiet rhythm. There is motion here, but also a pause: the feeling of watching a current change direction and settling into the moment as it passes.
The title leaves room for interpretation. Nearness does not always mean arrival. Sometimes the space between the two is where attention, longing, or possibility gathers. The painting invites viewers to slow down and find their own meaning in that distance.
