Coming Out is an original pastel and acrylic work created in 2020. It captures the moment when something long concealed can no longer remain contained.
A figure appears to press forward from within the composition, moving through fragmented forms and layered marks. The surface carries the strain of confinement, but also the fierce energy of release. Nothing about the emergence feels passive. It is physical, vulnerable, and alive.
I created the work around the emotional experience of claiming an authentic self after fear, expectation, or silence has made that honesty feel dangerous. Coming out may name a particular declaration of identity, but it can also describe the many ways we step beyond secrecy and allow ourselves to be seen.
The painting holds that threshold. There is the life before disclosure, and then there is the instant when concealment begins to break apart. Freedom has not yet become easy, but it has become possible.
