About This Artwork
I created Conception in 2010 after attending a St. Louis Symphony performance of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. I began thinking about how music creates images without showing them directly: through rhythm, shifts in tone, pauses, and the movement from one passage to another.
I carried that experience into the painting through layered acrylic and expressive gestures. The work holds both the immediacy of listening and the slower process of returning to an idea in the studio. Its forms move between energy and reflection, translating something heard into something seen.
Conception is part of an exploration of how one art form can take shape inside another, and how an experience continues to change as we remember and interpret it.
