About This Artwork
Entwined was created in 2013 while I was recovering from broken elbows, injured wrists, and broken bones in my hand. Unable to work through my usual physical process, I turned to whatever materials in the studio I could reach and manipulate.
I painted, poured, and scraped materials across the canvas. At times, I held paint sticks in my mouth to make the marks my hands could not. Burgundy lines twist through fields of white, separating and rejoining like tendons, roots, or branching veins. The surface carries the evidence of a body adapting in real time.
The work is not simply about injury. It is about the instinct to create when the familiar means of creation have been taken away.
