Face Beneath the Silence is an original black-and-white acrylic painting from my ongoing series, Turbulence Behind Tranquility. Created on archival paper, the work explores the concealed emotional life that remains present beneath withdrawal and silence.
The figure appears only partially revealed. Black acrylic gathers into the suggestion of a face, while other features dissolve into the open white surface. The image hovers between recognition and disappearance, as though the subject is attempting to emerge but cannot fully cross the distance between an internal experience and the outside world.
The title reflects the way silence can conceal profound emotional activity. A person may appear composed while privately enduring depression or psychological exhaustion. Beneath that silence, an entire interior world continues to exist.
Face Beneath the Silence considers what remains unseen when language fails or withdrawal becomes necessary. The painting invites viewers to look beyond outward stillness and recognize the presence, complexity, and humanity that may be hidden underneath it.

Face Beneath the Silence is part of Turbulence Behind Tranquility, a project exploring mental illness, trauma, recovery, and resilience through abstraction and intuitive mark-making. Each painting creates space for experiences that are frequently hidden, misunderstood, or difficult to express through language.
The restricted palette intensifies the emotional tension of the work. Black marks form and obscure the face simultaneously, while the surrounding white space suggests distance, isolation, and the absence of words. The figure remains visible enough to be witnessed but never fully explained.
Throughout the series, I seek to acknowledge the complexity of mental illness without reducing the individual to suffering. This work asks viewers to consider how much can remain alive beneath quietness and how easily silence can be mistaken for emptiness.
Like much of my work, Face Beneath the Silence remains open to interpretation, inviting viewers to bring their own experiences of isolation, concealment, vulnerability, and recognition to the piece.
