Ghost of a Chance – Original Modern Abstract Painting by Erin McGrath Rieke

About this Artwork

I created Ghost of a Chance as a 48 x 48-inch original abstract painting that explores the quiet tension between uncertainty and presence. Working in layered shades of gray and muted green, I wanted the surface to hold both movement and stillness at the same time, like something just barely forming at the edge of perception.

As I built the painting, I let the material respond to itself, letting paint, texture, and rhythm guide the direction of the work. What emerged feels both restrained and alive, as if the surface is constantly holding something just beneath articulation.

The grays carry a sense of shadow and inward reflection for me, while the greens introduce moments of breath and grounding. Together, they create a tension I kept returning to while painting, a push and pull between heaviness and release, doubt and quiet clarity.

Ghost of a Chance became a meditation on impermanence and emotional fragility, but also on resilience. There is a feeling in it of standing at the edge of something unknown, sensing possibility even when nothing feels certain. I wanted it to hold that exact threshold space.

The work moves through contrast. Weight and airiness. Opacity and transparency. Hesitation and resolve. These oppositions are what give it its emotional structure. I see it as a place where stillness is not absence, but awareness.

Additional Information

My approach to modern abstract painting is rooted in emotional responsiveness to color, gesture, and texture. In Ghost of a Chance, I worked with gray and green tones to build depth and movement across the canvas, allowing subtle shifts in layering to guide the emotional tone of the piece.

The surface carries quiet variation that reveals itself slowly over time. I am interested in that kind of viewing experience, where meaning unfolds gradually rather than immediately, much like emotional understanding itself.

This painting continues my exploration of abstraction as a way to hold what is unspoken. Ghost of a Chance exists in that liminal space where uncertainty and hope overlap, and where reflection becomes its own kind of grounding.
