About This Artwork
I created Inside in 2022, working with acrylic paint and mixed media on a deep canvas. Words and marks entered the painting before I knew what I wanted to say. I kept layering them, allowing some to remain legible and others to disappear beneath the next passage of paint.
Pale areas of the canvas are interrupted by black lines, fragments of writing, and sudden color. Pink and yellow appear through the surface; blue gathers lower down. The marks cross and crowd one another, then give way to open space. Looking at the painting feels a little like following a thought that changes while it is being written.
Inside is an attempt to give visible form to an inner life that does not arrive in orderly sentences. It holds the confusion, movement, and brief moments of recognition that can coexist within a single day.
