Little Dove – Original Pastel Artwork on Paper by Erin McGrath Rieke
About This Artwork
I created Little Dove in 2021 as a reflection on peace, tenderness, and the quiet forms of hope we carry through uncertain periods.
The dove has long represented freedom and renewal, but I was drawn to something more intimate than the symbol itself. I was thinking about fragility. About how hope can remain small and easily frightened while still possessing the instinct to rise.
Working in pastel gave the piece a softness that felt necessary. The pigment responds immediately to pressure, leaving behind marks that can be blended but never entirely controlled. That delicacy became part of the meaning.
Little Dove is not about the arrival of perfect peace. It is about protecting the small, living part of ourselves that continues to search for it.

Additional Information
Pastel creates a surface that feels both immediate and vulnerable. Pigment rests directly upon the paper, preserving the movement of the hand and the subtle variations created through pressure, blending, and gesture.
In Little Dove, that material fragility mirrors the emotional subject. Hope does not always appear as certainty or triumph. Sometimes it survives quietly, waiting for enough safety to open its wings.
