I created Mother Carries the Burden in 2019 as part of my Reflections and Turbulence Behind Tranquility series. The work considers the emotional weight carried by those expected to nurture, protect, remember, and continue.
Caregiving contains its own contradictions. Love can be sustaining, but it can also become labor no one sees. Strength may keep a family intact while quietly depleting the person upon whom everyone depends.
Layers of acrylic paint gather across reclaimed art paper through texture and restless movement. Some marks appear to brace against the weight of others. The composition holds tension between devotion and exhaustion, resilience and vulnerability, giving oneself away and struggling to remain whole.
Mother Carries the Burden honors the work performed in silence. It also asks what becomes of the caregiver when care is expected without limit.
