About This Artwork
I created Quiet Desperation in 2022 using acrylic on canvas. A pale face emerged as I worked through layers of dark blue, green, and burgundy. I left parts of it indistinct. The figure seems present, yet difficult to reach.
Color gathers around the face in restless passages. Near the bottom of the canvas, warmer orange and ochre interrupt the darker field. The painting holds the distance between what others can see and what a person may be carrying within.
I did not want to resolve that feeling for the viewer. Quiet Desperation asks for a closer look at someone who might otherwise pass as composed.
