About This Artwork
I created River, No. One in 2019 as part of my River Series. It began as a live painting during the 50th birthday celebration of my friend and gender-violence-awareness partner, Rachel Ebeling. Family, friends, and community members were gathered in the room, and the first gestures took shape in response to that shared moment.
I continued the painting in the studio, building on those initial marks and refining the movement across the canvas. The acrylic passages suggest the changing current of a river, where calm and turbulence can exist at once.
For me, River, No. One is a tribute to Rachel, to friendship, and to the work of supporting survivors. It holds the feeling of a community coming together to celebrate a life shaped by courage, compassion, and purpose.
