About This Artwork
I created Self Awareness IV in 2018 as part of my Reflections and Turbulence Behind Tranquility series. The work examines the difficult form of awareness that arrives when the self can no longer hide from itself.
Black and gray acrylic marks collide across the recycled paper. Jagged lines press against blurred passages, while smeared forms appear to surface and disappear. The composition holds the agitation of an internal argument without attempting to resolve it.
The paper carries its own history. Its irregular texture resembles skin marked by pressure, memory, and use. I allowed that surface to remain visible because self-awareness is rarely clean. It can be disorienting and severe. It can also be the place where change begins.
Self Awareness IV does not offer introspection as serenity. It presents it as confrontation: the instant when recognition becomes unavoidable and a more honest understanding of oneself begins to take shape.
