Surprise – Original Framed Pastel Artwork on Paper by Erin McGrath Rieke
About This Artwork
I created Surprise in 2021 as part of The Lotus Project, a body of work exploring transformation, presence, repetition, and the unexpected ways meaning emerges through an intuitive process.
I began without a fixed image. Pastel moved across the paper in response to gesture, pressure, and instinct. As the composition developed, something unfamiliar began to reveal itself. The work changed direction before I had time to impose an explanation upon it.
The title reflects that moment of recognition. Surprise can arrive as joy, disruption, discovery, or the sudden awareness that we have become someone different from the person who began.
Within The Lotus Project, transformation is rarely presented as a clean passage from one state to another. It happens through uncertainty and accumulation. Surprise holds the instant when that quiet internal change finally becomes visible.

The Lotus Project uses intuitive mark-making and layered abstraction to examine how awareness develops over time. The work is rooted in the idea that transformation often begins before we recognize it.
In Surprise, spontaneity becomes both method and subject. The composition preserves the energy of discovery, allowing the unexpected to remain unresolved rather than forcing it into a fixed interpretation.
