About This Artwork
I created The Hallowing in 2023 during a period of profound depression. Part of my Turbulence Behind Tranquility project, the work became an act of confronting the darkness rather than continuing to outrun it.
Years of therapy and hard-earned coping skills had given me ways to endure, but they had not eliminated the shadow. With the materials in front of me, instinct took over. A figure began to emerge, carrying fear, grief, and the wounded parts of myself I had spent years attempting to silence.
The title comes from the word hallow, meaning to make sacred. I did not want to glorify suffering. I wanted to recognize the courage required to witness it honestly and to approach the most damaged parts of the self with compassion rather than contempt.
The Hallowing is a work about survival, but also consecration. It honors the self that remained inside the darkness and continued asking to be seen.

The Hallowing explores the invisible realities of mental illness, trauma, recovery, and resilience. It does not attempt to explain or resolve the experience. Instead, it creates space for fear, grief, vulnerability, and compassion to exist together.
As part of Turbulence Behind Tranquility, the work challenges the idea that suffering defines the person who experiences it. The wounded self is neither hidden nor discarded. It is witnessed.
