About This Artwork
I created Trouble in 2010 during one of my first live painting events for Art Saint Louis, alongside a classical concert featuring members of the St. Louis Symphony. Painting in front of an audience brought its own pressure: the wish to make something polished, the uncertainty of working in public, and the effort to stay close to what I actually felt.
The painting holds that tension. Swirling color and textured, layered brushstrokes move between outward energy and a more private emotional landscape. I let the surface remain imperfect and alive, allowing the act of painting to carry the feeling of the moment.
My children were nearby, a grounding presence as I worked. Looking back, Trouble holds both the unease of being seen and the steadiness that can come from staying connected to what matters. It reflects the way creative work can make room for conflict without needing to resolve it.
