About This Artwork
I created You Give Me Strength in 2020 during an emotional reunion with my husband after a long and difficult period apart. The work grew from the complicated relief of that moment. There was tenderness, but also vulnerability. The recognition of what had endured sat beside the knowledge of what had nearly been lost.
Four indistinct figures occupy the composition. They appear almost spectral, gathered beneath the loose outline of an orange sun. Their forms remain uncertain, yet they are held together by an invisible center.
Using pastel and acrylic, I allowed the figures to surface gradually from the paper. They do not tell a complete story. They exist more like memory does, partly obscured and altered by the emotions surrounding it.
You Give Me Strength is about the people and fragile threads of hope that carry us when we cannot move forward alone. Strength does not always arrive as certainty. Sometimes it is the experience of being seen again.
